My experience of learning English, as a Buddhist monk who lived
in a monastery in decade of the 1990s I did not have a chance to study in any English
schools but I have a chance to learn English by speaking to tourists who entered
into my monastery for sight-seeing. There I started my practice of English speaking
sentence by sentence. I was rather shy to speak a little bit. I tried hard to learn
English vocabularies by heart from a dictionary but at that time I did not have
any English book of phrase or idiom therefore I did not know much about phase
or idiom and English grammar is quite not so good enough .
Now I am working as a researcher and also studying in PhD
level in abroad but I have a problem about academic English in four skills such
as listening, speaking, writing and reading because I have not much chance to practice
my English I can do it only in the class.
The ways of improving of my academic English in the case of
learning by my self. For writing I have to read articles, essays, books and
other written text in English because I was thought that reading is the abase
of the writing. When I read the text I have found many words that I do not know
the meaning of them so I have to open a dictionary many times and write down
the meaning at a side of the page. It takes a lot of time to finish one text
but I have to try like this. The communication with friends in English via
email is the way that can help for improving of the writing as well. For listening
I practice via internet by YouTube, CNN, BBC and other media. For speaking it
is still complicated for me to improve because I do not have a chance to
practice in the good way as exchange language with the people who speaking
English in the daily life. However, I have to pay attention more and more and I
hope I shall get successful.
As mentioned above about my experience of learning English.
I am glad to share to everybody if anyone who has some good idea or experience
please share to me too. You would be grateful and thankful so much.
